New Law Protects Children from Secondhand Smoke in Cars

A new California law has gone into effect to protect children from being exposed to secondhand smoke in a vehicle. Under the new law, smokers in California can be fined up to $100 for smoking any cigarette, pipe, or cigar in a moving or parked vehicle while any youth younger than the age of 18 are present. A law enforcement officer may not stop a vehicle for a smoking violation alone.

To find out more, check out the Smoke-free Cars Fact Sheet.

Reasons to Keep Your Car Smoke-free All the Time

  • Secondhand smoke can make children, adults, and pets sick.
  • Studies show that an open window does not clear the air.
  • The harmful toxins from the smoke stay in the air and upholstery of a car for weeks.
